Meet Our White German Shepherd Hilo
Everyone always asks me about his name. Most people say “Hero” or “Kilo” or “Helio”…but, it's Hilo – pronounced HE-LOW. Hilo is an island in Hawaii. Our favorite island. We went on a cruise that year in November and visited five of the islands. Awesome vacation! Every island was absolutely amazing, but Hilo left the biggest impression. So, a dog was my Christmas present in 2007. My fiance and I had been talking about getting a dog. We were both leaning towards a German Shepherd. After researching online, we stumbled upon White German Shepherds. That was it! We had to have one. And we would call him Hilo. Of course, while looking online, we ended up on many websites of breeders. This is the part where I stick my foot in my mouth because I am very pro-rescue and really wish we would have gone that route, but we fell in love with his little face and his ears!
We had him shipped from North Carolina. I had to pick him up from the airport in his pet carrier. He was just too precious and well behaved! After I got him home, he was exploring his new surroundings. I showed him his pet bed and pet toys that we had stocked up on before his arrival. I highly recommend getting these supplies before you get the puppy! Soon, he was completely relaxed and instantly part of the family.
Having a puppy is rough in the beginning. I guess it's somewhat like having a baby. Even down to the crying at night. Many lost hours of sleep occurred in the first few months. Well, at least a baby doesn't have to go outside every half hour in the middle of winter and I'm pretty sure they won't chew your brand new boots!
Anyway, Hilo will be three this year and now he's a pleasure to have. He's still got some “puppy” in him, but he has calmed down dramatically from the first year. I no longer want to rip my own hair out in frustration and I now consider him my friend. He makes me feel very safe in the house and I can't imagine not having him!
