Mmmm….cheese! I consider myself to be a cheese connoisseur, but I was not familiar with grilling cheese. Yanni Grilling Cheese is a fun crowd-pleasing food. Product was received for review purposes and this post may contain affiliate links.
It all started with a scavenger hunt. A scavenger hunt? Yes. My FedEx guy left a note on the door that said “call me and I’ll tell you where I put the package.” Unfortunately, there was no phone number. Hmmm…where could it be? There aren’t that many places the driver could have hidden the box, so I looked around a little. I finally found it shoved in a corner on my deck with the cushions from the patio furniture all around it.
The grilling cheese came very well packed. There were several reusable ice packs, plus a thermal bag to keep the cheese cold. Once I got it unpacked, I saw that there were 2 flavors of cheese – original and jalapeno. The 8 oz blocks of cheese came in vacuum sealed packages.
Since we’re not big fans of spicy stuff, I decided to try the original flavor first. I opened the package and saw that the cheese has a semi-firm texture. I cut off a small piece to taste. It had a very mild flavor with a texture that was slightly softer and a bit chewier than cheddar. Interesting. Now to grill!
I sliced off slabs that were about ½ inch thick. I put them into skillet and turned the burner on. I watched the cheese, waiting to see what would happen. After a couple of minutes, it started to glisten. A couple minutes later, it started to lose the sharp rectangular shape and get softer edges. I decided to flip It over, and saw that there was a nice, golden crust. After another minute or so, the other side was nice and golden, too and out the slices came.
We tasted them and the flavor was still very creamy and a tad bit soft, but not gooey. Next, I cut another batch of slices and sprinkled them with garlic. Into the skillet they went! When they were done, we decided they were pretty good. In fact, we liked them a bit better than the plain ones. But then again, doesn’t garlic make just about everything better?
One day, I was feeling a bit adventurous. I ventured into the kitchen and got out the Jalapeno flavor of the Yanni Grilling Cheese. As I mentioned, we’re not big fans of spicy here. I examined the cheese and thought it looked a little like pepper jack. Okay, that’s not too terribly spicy. You have to understand – sometimes mild salsa is too hot for us! And hot sauce? Forget about it. I tasted a small piece – not bad. I cut off a slice and tossed it into a pan. After the grilling cheese formed the now-familiar golden crust, I took it out. I took a tentative bite, and was pleasantly surprised. It had a mild, peppery flavor, but was not spicy. I ate the rest of the piece and didn’t have any kind of unpleasant reaction. I think I may prefer the Jalapeno to the original flavor.
This would be great for holiday entertaining. It has a real ooh-ahh factor, and I imagine grilling it on a grill or barbecue would be even more impressive. Although I’ve only eaten it plain, Yanni Grilling Cheese would be good in a salad. I think it would be especially good in a Caesar salad or a fruit salad.
