It's hard to wake up these days. With winter in full blast here in Chicago–I know, I know, it's been really mild, but I still have a really hard time with the short days–my Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is also at full steam. I've never been a huge fan of this season because I hate being cold but recently I discovered just how much the changes in the amount of sunlight I get affect me. It's time I find some light therapy… Product was received for review purposes and this post may contain affiliate links.
I used to joke about wanting to hibernate all winter and complain about winter weight gain. But, it turns out I actually am suffering from SAD. I get really depressed, sluggish, and irritable. I guess I would've made a great bear!
All through high school I used go tanning. Gross. But, wow, when I got out of that bed I would feel like a million bucks! That was when I started noticing just how much light affects me.
Now, that I'm older and more mature, I don't want to be damaging my skin just for a mood booster. Naturally, when I came across these BioBrite Alarm Clocks, I was immediately intrigued.
BioBrite Sunrise Alarm Clock – Light Therapy – Perfect wake up for SAD Sufferers!
I'm completely addicted to my BioBrite Sunrise Alarm Clock! Keep in mind: I am not a “morning person” in the slightest. I set my alarm for about an hour earlier than I absolutely have to get up, knowing I will hit the snooze button in my sleep for at least that long. I even set multiple alarms. I have one on my nightstand, one on my phone and then I set one in the kids' room so if I really oversleep, at least they can come in and pounce.
The first time I used the Biobrite Sunrise Alarm Clock, I was a bit skeptical that just a little beeping and a light slowly coming on would actually wake me up. So, I set it for earlier than I needed, and still set my other alarms.
I was totally shocked at how awesome I felt when this light awakened me. There was no adrenaline rush responding to offensive fire-alarm style beeping, no desire for snooze-ing, and I was WIDE awake, and no joke–HAPPY. It's like it slowly and gently took me out of wherever I was in my sleep-cycle so that my brain had time to adjust to the idea of getting up. The only problem was, I was an hour early! Chad was looking at me like I was crazy. He's all about sleeping in and wanted nothing to do with me at that hour. So, I got up and instead of rushing around like a total spaz, I checked a few emails, made coffee, flipped through a magazine and then woke the kids up with a smile. Even they were stunned to see me so fresh and lively at that hour.
Another great feature is the sunset option. You can choose to fall asleep to the slowly dimming light. It's great because as you are drifting into slumber, you don't have to worry about getting up to turn off a light. It's so peaceful! Chad and I will pillow talk ourselves to sleep. It's ridiculously sweet. And you can set it to last for 15, 30, 45, or even 60 minutes. It's so relaxing. I find myself using this light for reading and for everything while I'm in my room. The light is so natural feeling, it has truly helped me get through these short days.
This SunRise Clock also has sleep sounds, but that's not really my thing while sleeping. But, I do like them while I'm reading. Makes me feel like I'm sitting at the beach while getting into a good book.
Here's a quick list of all the SunRise Clock with Sleep Sounds features:
- Set your own sunrise and/or sunset for 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes
- Back-up audible alarm
- Snooze option
- Smart display that dims at night so it won't disturb your sleep
- nightlight option
- 12 or 24 hour time read-outs
- security feature that turns the light on at random times at night to indicate that someone is at home
- several soothing sounds–ocean waves, white noise, gentle rain and a babbling brook

I seriously cannot express how much I love this product. It's a bit pricey ($124.95), but for all the good it has done me, I find it really priceless. This light therapy, partnered with the auto-start in my car has made winter so much more manageable! 🙂
