In the first of the Eliza Gordon mystery series, author Amy Beth Arkawy introduces us to many characters – all entwined in a small town mystery in the book Killing Time. The main character, Eliza is a widow – having moved to the small town that her late husband had ties to. She is a retired actress, a café owner (the Soup Opera), and a local playhouse star. Within just a few chapters, the small town she lives in is a part of a murder mystery, and Eliza sets her sights on solving it. Having grown up in a small town, I loved the drama and the grasp the author had on the gossip, small town people with big personalities, and the big drama of little stories. The story is hard to follow at first with MANY characters, but soon falls into an easy stride, and I came to know and appreciate all of them. The mystery on the other hand – is written in such a way that it is hard to know “who done it” – and as a reader, I had no idea how it was going to end right up until the last chapter. With the right amount of danger, intrigue and a little bit of romance – it was a pretty good book – and I look forward to following Eliza on whatever other adventures she goes through in other books.
