Do you know diabetes? It probably knows you.
I'd like to start by saying that I do not have diabetes. (At least, I don't think I do. That fasting glucose test may have missed it.) I've known people with it, but never really thought much about it. I've occasionally thought it may be in my future because I know sugar makes me feel, well, like crap. Sugar Nation, written by Jeff O'Connell, was loaned to me by a very good friend. My life will never be the same after reading this book. Post contains affiliate links.
Sugar Nation: The Hidden Truth Behind America's Deadliest Habit and The Simple Way to Beat It, has opened my eyes to a new career path, healthier parenting habits and a longer life. Yep, got all that from a book. Which is why I contacted the author (borderline stalked him really) to have this great opportunity to offer you guys the chance to win your own copy. Thanks Jeff!
Sugar Nation is not just some random account of some patient's story or a bunch of data and stats. O'Connell connects with his readers by sharing personal details of his journey and experience with diabetes. Sadly, I'm not that surprised that when he was diagnosed with prediabetes, he was given no concrete guidance or treatment plan from his doctor to prevent this horrendous disease. He was basically left to his own devices to fail or thrive on his own; or succumb to the world of pharmaceuticals. Fortunately for us, he took his life, and newly discovered condition, into his own hands and went out in search for answers and explanations.
What he found were many contradictory, confused, and in some cases blatantly false statements regarding diabetes. His response, “If it makes no sense, why are we doing it?”
All the answers lie in our behavior and nutrition. It's really that simple.
Unless you're a healthy Eskimo, you should read this book.
As for me, I am now going back to school for a degree in nutrition science. I finally have that gut feeling that I'm on the right path.
I, too, have been to doctors with issues that could have been solved with diet and exercise but I was instead handed that little white flag, I mean sheet of paper, with a prescription scribbled on it. That's what our doctors have been trained to do. Diagnose your problem. Find a pill that will fix it. And then find another pill that will combat the first pills' side effects. But everyone seems to have forgotten that we are what we eat! I cannot wait to discover more ways to prevent or even cure illnesses with simple daily lifestyle changes.

I’m a type 2 diabetic, thanks to all the sugar in our food and drinks, but, I’ve reduced the amount of carbs, simple, and sugar in my diet and now my levels are good.
Will not drink milk, too much sugar in it and many other foods I enjoyed but they were harming my health.
Sugar was a building block of commerce for centuries and it will take more centuries to wean ourselves off it, or reduce the amounts we consume.
