With the amazing popularity of The Avengers – also known as The Ultimates – I thought it might be cool to take a trip deep, deep into geekdom and enlighten you on 8 things you might not know about The Avengers (The Ultimates) if you're strictly a fan of the movies.
The Avengers are the Ultimates and Other Cool Stuff
Let me start off by saying that the past few years have been some of the best of my geeky life. I grew up on Marvel comics, and I still read them regularly. The Ultimate Universe is my favorite to date, so when some truly fantastic comic movies from Marvel started coming out, I just about had a stroke, I geeked out so hard. That's because I love these characters, and they were obviously based off of the Ultimate Universe.
1: The Avengers are the Ultimates
In the Ultimate Universe, the Avengers are called the Ultimates. If you read The Ultimates, you can clearly see that the costumes, character personalities, and even their interactions are all the basis for the The Ultimates – oops – The Avengers movies. I think that's incredibly cool, because The Ultimates had a decidedly darker, more violent feel that the traditional Avengers.
2. Ant Man was One of the Original Avengers
In the classic Avengers series, Ant Man was a founding member. In The Ultimates, he was Giant Man, another incarnation of the Ant Man technology. He was a founding member of that team as well. However in The Ultimates, he was an ultimate @$$hole, who was abusive towards his girlfriend, The Wasp.
3. Spider-Man Was a Member
Spider-Man was a member of the Avengers. That's why I and my fellow geeks flipped our collective wigs when we heard that Marvel is sharing the rights to Spider-Man with Sony. Spidey will most likely take his rightful place as an Avenger at a later date. BOOYAH!
4. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are Mutants
Marvel just isn't allowed to call them that in the movie because 20th Century Fox owns the rights. So you'll never hear them referred to as what they really are. As a hard core comic geek, I'm not a fan of this, but I'm willing to let it slide.
5. ALL of Those Huge Fights Happened
Whether in The Ultimates or the classic comic books. At some point all of those crazy hero on hero fights happened. While Thor and Hulk didn't fight in the Triskelion in the comic book, they did go at it. Just as Iron Man and The Hulk, Thor and The Hulk, and all of the other fights we've seen in the Marvel movies actually happened at some point in the comic books.
6. Ultron Was an Obsessed Stalker Who Killed Scarlet Witch
As I said, The Avengers draws heavily on The Ultimates, so here's an interesting little tid-bit from The Ultimate Universe. In one story line, rather than being a world conquering powerhouse, Ultron was a robotic stalker with an obsessive love for Scarlet Witch. When he couldn't have her, he killed her.
7. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver Were a Thing
That's why Ultron couldn't have her. She was in a steamy love affair with Quicksilver. “But wait,” you say. “Aren't they brother and sister?” Yep. The sure are. O_o
8. Sam Jackson has ALWAYS Been Nick Fury
At least, he has in The Ultimates comics and the Ultimate universe. If you read the comic books, he was CLEARLY the model for Nick Fury. He looked exactly like him. In fact, Sam Jackson has gone on record saying he thought it was really cool to be the model for one of the biggest characters in the Ulitmate Universe.
Lesser Known Facts About The Ultimates, er, Avengers You Didn't Know
There you have it. 8 facts that you probably didn't know about The Ultimates – or The Avengers, if you prefer. While I think it's perfectly fine to enjoy these movies for the monstrously entertaining romps that they are. I felt it was my duty as a comic book geek to bring a little knowledge to those who are less geeky.
If you enjoyed this, get yourself some issues of The Ultimates, and read, read, read. It's a killer comic book. If you like those, don't stop. There's an entire Ultimate Marvel Universe out there just waiting to be discovered. It's a super sweet place to read about some equally sweet adventures.
