Cute Bats for Halloween Sugar Cookies

These bat sugar cookies are fun to make with the kids. Once you have the shapes cut out, children can help decorate the bats.

This recipes makes a lot of cookies, so they are ideal for Halloween parties or sharing with friends and family.

I never recommend handing out baked goods to trick-or-treaters, though. Wrapped candy is always better to hand out at the door for so many reasons!

Bat Sugar Cookies Ingredients

Here’s what you need to make this recipe. The measurements are in the recipe card below.

  • Butter
  • Sugar
  • Greek yogurt
  • Vanilla extract
  • Almond extract
  • Eggs
  • Flour
  • Baking soda
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Cake Boss Bat fondant/cookie cutter press
  • Wilton white vanilla fondant
  • Wilton black icing color
  • Wilton Blood Red Sparkle Gel

Halloween Bat Cookies Directions

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

Use an electric mixer to cream together the butter and sugar for a few minutes. Do this at medium speed using the paddle attachment.

Making cookie dough with flour, butter, and sugar.

Add the Greek Yogurt, vanilla extract, and almond extract to the mixture and and cream together for another 1 to 2 minutes at medium speed.

Add the eggs and beat together for about 3 minutes.

In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.)

Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet, mixing at low speed until all the ingredients are evenly combined.

Scoop the mixture into a medium bowl. Seal and refrigerate overnight.

The next day, remove the dough from the refrigerator and scoop out one fist-sized ball at a time. Place it onto parchment paper.

Knead the dough with your hands. Sprinkle flour onto a rolling pain and the dough to avoid sticking.

Use the rolling pin to evenly flatten the dough.

Using a cookie press to make bats from cookie dough and fondant.

Using the bat fondant/cookie cutter press, begin to cut each shape into the dough as many times as possible. Do NOT press down on the spring button, that’s for the fondant later.

Place all of the bat cookies onto a baking sheet. Bake in your preheated oven for 5 minutes per batch.

Once the cookies are baked, let them cool for about 5 minutes.

Add a few dabs of black coloring to the fondant. Kneed the fondant with your hands until the color is completely blended.

Use a rolling pin or fondant roller to flatten it into a thin layer.

Using a cookie cutter to create bat shapes out of black fondant.

Use the bat fondant/cookie cutter from earlier to cut as many bats as possible. This time, be sure to press down on the spring button when cutting each shape. This creates a 3D detailing for the bats.

Use the blood red sparkle gel to fill in the little eye indentations. Add the fondant bats to each cookie and press down gently to secure them.
