Lemons and Lavender
Lemons and Lavender: The Eco Guide to Better Homekeeping by Billee Sharp is a great book on living a life that is more affordable, healthy, and maybe even taking on a new hobby (like gardening?!). With chapters on budgeting, health, recycling (not just taking plastic containers out to the recycling bin, but REUSING things), cleaning, growing, recipes, and homemade gift ideas. Because there are a TON of ideas in the book, I will just selfishly share a few of my favorites with you so you can get a gist of the book.
Sell, Trade, Barter: My husband and I have ALWAYS been into saving money by shopping resale shops and garage sales – but we have NEVER set foot into the world of bartering – we have been using online postings to barter some of what we have that we do not need in order to find the things we do need. It has been fun to see how important things are to us when we can trade them for something we want really bad!
Freecycle: I had been a part of the freecycle network in my area for awhile, but instead of asking for things, I was just watching for them to come up. I decided to start ASKING for things and did REALLY well, you would be amazed at what people have just sitting around – and with freecycle, I can give it a new home for free!
Growing your food: We live in a condo, but we have a little bit of space on a patio, so I am planning to plant as much as I can this spring in small planters out on the porch. While I may not be able to grow stalks of corn, I should be able to have tomatoes and some smaller plants! The author also listed out things we can grow INSIDE like certain herbs and spices.
Holidays: Since we just celebrated Easter, we were able to use the natural egg dye that she suggested and it turned out great! TONS more ideas for holidays all year round
So there, four quick ideas from a book FULL of ideas on how to make simple (or HUGE) changes in your life to save money AND live a greener life.
I am excited to try out many of the summer type things (gardening, spring cleaning, etc) as we get into the warm weather!
