If you subscribe to cable how much is your bill? Mine is about $220. per month. That is so insane and it makes me see red every time I pay the bill. But, hubby would never let me cancel it. Thanks to Roku we might just be able to now… Product was received for review purposes and this post may contain affiliate links.
Roku 2 Streaming Player
Roku 2 is the second generation of the Roku streaming players. This tiny little box is the leading internet TV platform and allows you to stream nearly 300 channels of movies, music, games and more. Here are some of the places available:
- Hulu Plus
- Amazon Instant Video
- NBA Game Time
- NHL GameCenter Live
- Ultimate Fighting Championship
- Pandora, MOG, Rdio, Live 365 and TuneIn Radio – for music
- Facebook, Flickr and Vimeo – for photos and videos
- Disney, FoxNews.com, AOL and more – for entertainment and news
- And more!
Some of these are free and some require monthly subscriptions. We already had Netflix streaming, so that was convenient for us, but some of these would cost us additional. I will get back to the costs in a moment.
Let me back up and tell you how easy this is to install. Just a few hookups and you are good to go. We received the Roku 2 XS which is the top-of-the-line, fully-loaded unit. It includes everything that Roku has to offer and even the full version of the Angry Birds game for free! Let me tell you how fun it is to play Angry Birds on a big TV! You just use the Roku remote, to play, too – no additional remotes required. Once it was all hooked up we used the remote to set up the channels. The remote took a few tries to sync with the unit, but within about 10 minutes, we were in business.
When the options appeared on the screen I was able to figure it all out quickly. It’s all pretty self-explanatory. Some channels require additional authorization codes which you have to enter online. That was kind of a pain, but you only need to do it once. Now when we go to a channel, everything is done and it’s beyond convenient.
Now for the cost…. like I said, we were already Netflix subscribers, so that will not be additional. There are some free channels through the Roku, like Crackle, but it has commercials. Not the end of the world, but of course no commercials would be better! I am contemplating purchasing a monthly subscription to Hulu Plus. Once I get the “okay” to cancel cable, I will invest more on the Roku channels. With Netflix and Hulu, it would only cost about $15-ish a month. My cable bill is $220. That’s a $205 savings a month!!! No Brainer!
Roku is available in three different units: Roku 2 HD – $59.99, Roku 2 XD – $79.99, and Roku 2 XS – $99.99
Can be purchased at Roku.com, Best Buy, Fry’s, RadioShack, Target, Walmart and Amazon.com. For an additional savings you can use this link!
