Going back to school for kids means picking up all sorts of new things: knowledge, skills, friendships, germs… The latter is just a part of life that we as parents have to deal with the best we can. But when they come home with the sniffles, how can we tell if it’s just seasonal allergies in kids or a legitimate cold?
Seasonal Allergies in Kids
In grade school, my son suddenly started coming home with a runny nose for weeks. When it first started, I let him stay home thinking I was doing the world a favor by not letting him spread more germs in class. But once I realized it was lingering for so long, I took him to the doctor.
She said that he has seasonal allergies and that he is not contagious. Well, sheesh, I wish I would have known what to check for so he didn’t miss so many days of school.
But I felt so bad for him. School can be challenging enough without itchy eyes and a runny nose. Getting him to focus was hard enough without all that other distraction!
