The 4-1-1 on Life Skills: Essential Tips on: Home & Money Management; Personal Care & Safety; and More! is about the basic life skills needed by adults of all ages for everyday living. The author, Michele Sfakianos RN, says she was inspired to write the book for her daughter (and many readers) to help prepare them to be out on their own. The book is a helpful tool to (1) learn how, when, where to do things around the house and (2) to have as a reference around the home as things come up. As a somewhat recent graduate, and (again, somewhat recent) newlywed, I sometimes feel like I had missed the “how to” when it comes to being a grown-up. This book helped with a lot of the things I had either run into previously or things that I am currently avoiding because I didn’t know how to handle them. For example, I have a leaky faucet – I have no idea to fix it, my husband hasn’t had to do anything like that before either, so we listened to the drip, drip, drip for WEEKS. When I saw the book explained how to fix a leaky faucet, I knew it was time to tackle this simple project! Tips on car maintenance– when and what needs to be done, gift ideas, and tips on funeral arrangements – while typically not exciting to read about are really insightful and definitely something that I will come back to when the need arises.
While much of the content is basic tips that we *hope* that parents pass on to their children, or for those of you with children, hope that you will be able to pass on to them – this book is a great “just in case” resource! It is well organized, easy to find what you are looking for, and a book I am excited to have around the house.
