Why Canada Overtook The United States
Analysts say the U.S. drop reflects a series of reciprocal visa restrictions imposed by other nations in response to Washington’s tougher entry rules. By contrast, Canada benefits from more open diplomatic ties with countries like Belarus, Papua New Guinea, and Uzbekistan, and from visa exemptions in Bolivia and Rwanda, which remain closed to most American travelers.

When individual visa categories are separated, Canada ranks 32nd for visa-free travel, while the U.S. stands at 37th – a decline from last year, when both countries tied for 26th place. The report also highlighted China’s striking progress in expanding visa-free access. Since 2015, China has climbed more than 30 spots in the index, now allowing visa-free entry to citizens of 76 countries – 30 more than the United States. Although China slipped slightly from 62nd to 64th place this year, Henley attributes its overall gains to improved bilateral agreements.

Despite its improvement relative to the U.S., Canada’s overall standing fell slightly after Brazil reinstated visa requirements for Canadian travelers in 2025, citing Ottawa’s unwillingness to reciprocate.
