Times Square in New York is the world’s most stressful tourist trap, with 1,761 reviews calling it “overrated” or “underwhelming” according to research conducted by language experts in 2025. The iconic crossroads draws hundreds of thousands daily yet leaves many visitors feeling overwhelmed rather than inspired. Complaints about crime, homelessness and sanitation in Times Square have reached levels not seen in over a decade, with more than 2,800 sanitation-related complaints made to 311 about the ZIP code 10036 between Jan. 1, 2022 and May 1, 2025 – more than a 200% increase from the pre-pandemic tally.

Vinegar Hill, Downtown Brooklyn and the Theatre District/Times Square have the highest crime rates in New York City, with popular tourist hotspots like Times Square having surprisingly high rates of violent crime. Travelers cite aggressive vendors, costumed characters demanding tips, and the overwhelming chaos of flashing billboards as major turn-offs. Honestly, the place feels more like a sensory assault than a cultural experience.

Hollywood Walk of Fame, Los Angeles

The Hollywood Walk of Fame was ranked the world’s worst attraction, scoring just 2.67 out of 10 due to low safety ratings and significant distance from LAX in a 2025 analysis by travel company Stasher. Located 23 miles from the LAX airport, this sidewalk of celebrity stars had the lowest Google rating and safety score among all global attractions studied.

Visitors cited overcrowding, cleanliness concerns, aggressive street performers, and disappointment over how little there actually is to do once you arrive. Multiple recent reviews describe the area smelling of urine and marijuana, with homeless individuals struggling visibly on the sidewalks. The whole area felt unsafe during visits, with constant hawkers approaching visitors, a lot of people clearly struggling with addiction, and an overall uncomfortable atmosphere. What you imagine as glamorous Hollywood glitz becomes an uncomfortable walk dodging aggressive vendors and searching for parking.

Trevi Fountain, Rome

The popularity of the Trevi Fountain is what got it outed by a March 2025 Radical Storage survey as one of the most disappointing tourist attractions, with almost a quarter of people surveyed having a negative take on their experience of the fountain, with just under 17% of people citing the crowds and mobility as the biggest impediments. The baroque masterpiece draws such massive crowds that Rome implemented a new queuing rule in 2024 to manage the excited hordes.

Anywhere from 10,000 to 12,000 tourists were known to visit the fountain daily before crowd control measures. Getting a decent photo or even a glimpse of the fountain requires patience and persistence through shoulder-to-shoulder tourists. The surrounding area is packed with overpriced restaurants and shops designed specifically to trap visitors.

The Radical Storage survey found that 37.2% of reviews for the baths were negative, with inaccessibility and the common complaint of large crowds impacting wait times causing this attraction to be placed third-worst among global disappointments. With 1.7 million attendees in 2024 alone, Széchenyi Baths and Pool earned over $37.3 million in revenue aided by tourists who made up 35% of visitors.

The overcrowding complaint doesn’t appear to be an exaggeration according to a June 2025 Tripadvisor review that called the place a disaster, with no available sunbeds and queues of people lining up for an already overcrowded space. A three-year renovation project begun in 2024 hopes to address complaints, though whether this will fix the experiential problems remains uncertain.

Alton Towers, United Kingdom

Although a tourist draw for the last 45 years, according to the Radical Storage survey, Alton Towers disappointed 49.4% of visitors, making it one of the most underwhelming destinations in the study. As per the survey, 18% of reviews called out a lack of value for money, with visitors complaining bitterly about pricing.

A 2024 Reddit thread entitled, “Why is AT so damn expensive?,” wrote about spending £900 – equal to around $1,216 USD – to fast track five people through the park for a single day. The expense doesn’t stop at entrance fees either, with food at the park described as terrible yet ridiculously expensive. Nearly half of all visitors walk away feeling they didn’t get their money’s worth.

The Radical Storage survey found that 31.2% of reviews about the waterpark expressed some version of a negative experience, despite Siam Park winning awards. The crowds left little in the way of seating – specifically sun loungers – while adding to hour-long queues for rides, creating a frustrating experience for visitors hoping to relax.

The review also complains of a confusing map of the park, which made navigating the space and finding specific rides a logistical nightmare. Visitors arriving during Europe’s 2024 heatwave, where temperatures broke 105 degrees Fahrenheit, found the lack of available seating and long queues particularly uncomfortable. The gap between the park’s reputation and actual experience left many tourists disappointed.

Mount Rushmore, South Dakota

Mount Rushmore in South Dakota faces scrutiny, with many reporting it as smaller and less impressive in person, especially after long drives through remote areas, with posts describing it as “the most disappointing tourist spot in America,” with complaints about high entry fees and limited viewing angles. The monument receives harsh criticism from those who make the journey.

A Tripadvisor user wrote that “A perfectly good mountain was ruined to create this,” adding that a Barbie version shown by their niece was “miles better,” while a second shared that “This has always been a bucket list experience and I couldn’t be much more underwhelmed”. The remote location combined with modest viewing options makes travelers question whether the detour was worthwhile. Let’s be real, after hours of driving through empty landscape, seeing four faces carved into rock from a distance doesn’t deliver the impact people expect.

The Colosseum, Rome

When it came to the Colosseum, “too many hawkers” and “long queues” were common complaints, with many also having issues with “access and the condition of the site,” and unsatisfactory guides. The ancient amphitheater ranks as the seventh most overrated attraction globally according to a Rough Guides survey.

One respondent remarked that “the building itself was not so interesting as it was just a big theatre,” while another was unhappy to see that “so much of the tiered seating is gone, unlike many other amphitheatres”. Queue times can stretch for hours, especially during peak tourist season. Visitors expecting to explore freely often find themselves rushed through in guided tours that miss key areas.

Stonehenge, England

In 2024, a poll by Rough Guides saw the 5,000-year-old stone circle voted the world’s most overrated attraction, with visitors describing it harshly. According to Wingie’s analysis, England’s Warwick Castle received the highest proportion of overrated mentions compared to reviews, with Stonehenge following closely, receiving harsh criticism from travelers worldwide.

What is essentially a bunch of big stones in a field disappoints tourists who don’t expect to get near let alone touch the stones, don’t expect to see anything interesting in the immediate vicinity with no accompanying museum or tourist centre, and certainly don’t expect good weather. You’re kept at a significant distance from the monument, and the site offers minimal context or educational material. For many, it’s a bunch of rocks viewed from behind barriers.

Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

Ha Long Bay turned out to be one of the most overrated places to visit in Vietnam, being relatively expensive requiring a cruise booking, where visitors are greeted with a polluted bay filled with other tourist boats jostling for space. What should be a serene natural wonder becomes a crowded waterway packed with tour vessels.

Being on a tour means you’re on someone else’s schedule, often including stopping off in the same bays as everyone else or some tacky restaurant or “floating village” where you’ll be expected to buy overpriced souvenirs, with weather that is ridiculously unpredictable so visitors more than likely find themselves in a gloomy overcast bay with low visibility. The combination of pollution, crowds, unpredictable weather, and forced shopping stops transforms what appears magical in photos into a frustrating tourist trap. Honestly, the reality rarely matches the stunning images that draw travelers there in the first place.
